A Public Works Staff Member is an essential employee responsible for the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and for performing manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Public Works Department. Trash pickup, park maintenance, street sign installation & maintenance, and tree trimming are the most common types of work performed.

 

The applicant will mow grass, prune trees and hedges, and plant flowers and trees as required. There is a requirement to clean Town Hall offices and park facilities, as well as clean up litter and empty trash cans. Sweeping and clean-up of debris and materials from the roads will be required as well as snow and ice removal, including manual shoveling of snow. Conducting other job-related duties as required.

 

Requirements for the position of Public Works Staff, a valid State issued driver’s license is preferred but not required as well as knowledge and ability to operate Town-owned vehicles and equipment, such as BobCat, snowplows, salt spreaders, power tools, chain saws, air compressor, etc. the ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently is required. The candidate will be required to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting heavy objects(not to exceed 50 pounds), and be able to work in all types of weather conditions. Safety procedures and practices are required and should be followed following OSHA regulations, including wearing safety equipment. A good working relationship with coworkers and the general public is a necessity. The candidate must be able to be called out for emergencies such as snowfall, floods, downed trees, etc., and must be knowledgeable in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks.

 

Candidates must treat a variety of people of diverse cultures and levels of society courteously, have exceptional customer service skills, and must be people-oriented. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively; orally and in writing. The position is 40 hours a week with occasional overtime; some evenings and weekend hours may be required.
