POLICE APPLICANTS
The Berwyn Heights, Maryland Police Department is accepting applications for experienced Police officers. Maryland Police Training Commission Certification ‘MPTC’ in good standing is required. Must have a valid driver’s license and a High School or GED equivalent. Must pass a background investigation, truth verification ‘polygraph,' psychological screening, drug testing, and physical. Experienced Officers, Spanish speakers, or those near retirement and seeking a second career are encouraged to apply. The starting base salary range is $47,876.64 to $54,439.63, Including Holiday Pay. Benefits include paid overtime, shift differential, clothing allowance, and cell phone allowance. The agency offers a Take-Home Vehicle program with Mobile Data ‘MDT’ Terminals, Body Worn Camera, Health Insurance, Vision, Dental, Life Insurance, and State Retirement provided to include short-term disability. A $2,000.00 opt-out fee is paid annually to those with their own Health Insurance and Locality Pay of $200.00 per month to those who live within five miles of the Town.
Berwyn Heights is the sixth, oldest municipality and a small quiet community in Prince George’s County near the University of Maryland, where community policing is practiced.
Duties:
Patrols by vehicle, bicycle, or foot, observes and reports incidents of vandalism, violations of state law and Town ordinance rules and regulations; notes and reports unsafe and unsightly conditions within the Town’s jurisdiction; directs traffic and parking; responds to calls for service and renders assistance as needed; secures a crime or accident scene and takes initial statements from victims and witnesses; apprehends, arrests, and process suspects; writes reports on incidents encountered during patrol; On foot patrols in the business districts or other areas of the Town; May serve as Field Training Officer to supervise, instruct, and evaluate trainee police candidates during the field training period. Prepares cases and appears in Court to testify as arresting officer or witness. May be assigned to perform preliminary, or follow-up investigations under the supervision and prepares reports on evidence obtained.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
Three (03) years or more of police experience as a Police Officer. The date of the Lateral Orientation will be given by the Human Resources Manager, Ms. Melanie Firesen. Due to the current national pandemic, COVID screening will be in place, and only a limited number of candidates will be invited. Lateral candidates are required to successfully complete post-offer medical/stress/psychological evaluations, drug tests and pass an extensive background investigation, including the oral board.
