The Historic City of Mount Rainier, MD is a residential community sitting on the border of Washington DC and Prince George’s County, MD. Serving 8,000 residents, the community is a small urban oasis of historic homes and unique shops. 

The City has an immediate opening for a CDL Driver in the Publc Works Department.

Salary Range: $19.5212 per hour to $22.3760  per hour (Depending on Experience) with growth potential to $29.5269 per hour.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Public Works Maintenance Manager, the Public Works CDL Driver is responsible for operating vehicles and performing tasks associated with waste management, streets and facility maintenance duties for the City of Mount Rainier. Employees are required to drive, and also perform heavy physical labor in outdoor weather conditions, using a variety of tools and equipment.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Drive the refuse packer vehicle on assigned routes for municipal residential waste collection.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance on truck by checking gas, oil, tires, and battery and packer fluid. Report all maintenance and equipment problems as necessary, and perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Engage in a variety of grounds maintenance work such as pruning, watering and mulching.
  • Operate hand and power tools to cut grass and remove weeds.
  • Perform various street maintenance duties including asphalt and concrete repairs, storm drain maintenance, sign installation and maintenance, street marking, litter removal, salt spreading, snow and ice removal and other required maintenance.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities.
  • Perform general custodial duties and activity set-up and break-down as required.
  • Provide contractors with access to City buildings and secure buildings after services are provided.
  • Load and unload heavy materials from trucks, and aid in moving boxes and equipment.
  • Observe and maintain established safety policies and procedures and take appropriate safety precautions during the course of performing daily tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and represent the City of Mount Rainier.
  • Drive snowplow and salt spreader as needed.
  • Direct traffic when needed to ensure safety of pedestrians, motorists and work crews.
  • Perform driving and manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Department of Public Works.

**The incumbent in this position is considered an "Essential" employee and may be required to report for work during natural/manmade disasters, and during special operations as assigned. "Essential" employees are expected to report or remain at work when other City employees are granted administrative leave.

*Must be available for City events throughout the year.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities

Key Qualifications – Experience and Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid CDL-A/B driver’s license, two years of professional CDL driving experience.
  • DOT Medical Certificate.
  • Two years of waste management experience preferred, municipal public works experience or any combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Available on-call for snow removal, critical maintenance, and emergencies.
  • Must be available for City events throughout the year.

Work Authorization
