The City of Glenarden is seeking a dependable and hard-working individual for an entry-level Public Works position. The incumbent will be responsible for a variety of custodial and maintenance duties to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe environment at municipal and community facilities. The individual will also assist with event support in the Gold Room when needed. This position reports directly to the Director of Public Works.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  • Clean municipal and community center areas using designated cleaning products and equipment, including buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, and shampooers.
  • Perform scheduled custodial tasks such as vacuuming offices, cleaning floors and stairways, maintaining breakrooms (including refrigerator and microwave cleaning), emptying trash, and sanitizing restrooms.
  • Sanitize assigned areas in accordance with safety procedures and directives from supervisors.
  • Maintain cleanliness of entrances, ramps, stairs, and adjacent sidewalks.
  • Restock restroom supplies at the Municipal and Community Centers.
  • When needed perform grounds maintenance, including lawn mowing, hedge trimming, and snow removal.
  • Remove snow from Municipal Center sidewalks and steps, followed by salt application.
  • Provide basic information to visitors regarding facility locations and scheduled events.
  • Assist the Events Manager with event setup in the Gold Room as needed.
  • Monitor and restock restrooms during events.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Valid Driver’s License mandatory.
  • Minimum one year of experience in custodial and/or maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and appropriate handling of cleaning/sanitizing products.
  • Familiarity with cleaning and preserving a variety of surfaces.
  • Ability to operate and maintain custodial equipment (e.g., floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, pressure washers).
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance and operate hand tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches).
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and to read and follow cleaning product labels.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, and perform physical tasks consistent with maintenance work.
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
