The City of Glenarden is seeking an experienced Maintenance Technician II to perform a variety of skilled tasks related to the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of City grounds, streets, and facilities. Primary responsibilities include landscaping, equipment maintenance, minor building repairs, and overall support of the Public Works Department. This position reports directly to the Director of Public Works.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain City grounds by mowing lawns, removing weeds, trimming, fertilizing, watering, and general landscaping.
  • Maintain flowers, and plants at parks, to include mowing, fertilizing, laying of sod and watering weekly.
  • Clean and maintain walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking areas; remove trash and debris.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, including oil changes, tire rotation/replacement, and greasing.
  • Provide custodial services for the Municipal Center, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, glass cleaning, and trash removal.
  • Sanitize restrooms by cleaning sinks, countertops, urinals, toilets, and floors; restock supplies.
  • Complete minor electrical and plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and steps around City buildings using shovels and de-icing materials.
  • Monitor and maintain streets, reporting issues such as potholes, missing signs, and debris.
  • Raise and lower flags daily and replace as necessary.
  • Post signage throughout the City for Council meetings and other events.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  •  High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One to three years’ which includes performing in areas such as operation of excavating equipment and repair and upkeep of parks structures and applying special knowledge of landscaping and horticultural techniques.
  • Two to four years of general maintenance and repair of parks, streets, and related equipment is preferred.
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining ground equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols for operating heavy and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and application of fertilizers, herbicide, and pesticide.
  • Knowledge of the operating and mechanical characteristics of a full range of grounds maintenance equipment sufficient to skillfully operate and perform routine maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe lifting techniques; techniques of safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of lawn and street maintenance equipment including both small and large engines.
  • Ability to perform repairs on lawn mowers and similar machinery.
  • Ability to complete basic landscaping, street repair, and sidewalk maintenance.
  • Ability to operate large vehicles, excavating and other mechanical equipment safely.
  • Ability to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to operate ground maintenance power equipment and hand tools skillfully and safely.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with senior citizens.
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with diverse, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
  • Ability to work varying schedules in support of projects and events.
  • Effective team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexible to work varying schedules in support of City events and projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency in using technology.
