The Town of La Plata seeks a dynamic and experienced Senior Planner to join our Planning Department. This is a key role in shaping the growth and character of our community through effective land use planning, development review, and long-range visioning.
As Senior Planner, you will oversee the full spectrum of land use planning activities in La Plata. You’ll manage site and subdivision plan reviews, ensure regulatory compliance, guide environmental assessments, and support major planning initiatives including the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. This role also provides key support to public boards and commissions such as the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Town Council.
Manage and review land use applications, including site plans, subdivisions, variances, and special exceptions.
Prepare staff reports, PowerPoint presentations, and recommendations for Town boards and commissions.
Communicate with residents, developers, agencies, and staff regarding zoning, permitting, and development inquiries.
Draft ordinances and zoning code amendments.
Conduct site inspections to verify development compliance.
Analyze regional development trends and advise on zoning policy updates.
Supervise junior planning staff and help build a collaborative, customer-focused work culture.
Maintain accurate records of approved developments and land use actions.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Management, Public Administration, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible planning experience in municipal/county government or consulting.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in Urban Planning.
AICP Certification.
GIS knowledge and experience.
Advanced knowledge of urban planning principles and land use regulation.
Strong research, analytical, and report-writing skills.
Ability to read and interpret architectural/engineering plans and technical studies.
Skilled in public presentations and inter-agency collaboration.
Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with Municity, CivicPlus, and database tools preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines.
This position requires both office work and occasional field inspections. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and have visual acuity to read plans in both paper and digital formats.
