JOB TITLE: UTILITY WORKER II

PAY GRADE: 5

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

ESSENTIAL STATUS: Essential

DEPARTMENT: Department of Public Works

SUPERVISOR: Utility Supervisor; Director of Public Works
 

Job Description: This is skilled work in the Town of Centreville. An employee in this class works with guidance from the Utility Supervisor, leads others in the installation, maintenance and repairing of the streets and water and sewer services. This position will be able to check work through spot checks and upon completion.

Essential Duties:
• Ability to lead others to repair water and sewer services; the maintenance of storm drains; the replacement of water meters; the maintenance of town streets; operation of an air compressor, air hammer, tamper, and various types of lawn mowers.
• Ability to lead others and have knowledge of the methods to install and repair water and sewer services, storm drains, water meters; patching streets; digging and cleaning ditches; and snow removal.
• Working knowledge of the operation of trucks, the care and routine maintenance of vehicles with gasoline engines; traffic regulation for the State of Maryland; the safety limits of the equipment operated, air compressors, air hammers, and tamper.
• Skill in the operation of a medium weight truck, backhoe, sewer jetter, jackhammer, and various other hand tools.
• Ability to motivate others in the maintenance and operations of vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
• Have a mechanical aptitude and ability to pass the departmental physical examination as required for this position.
• Ability to work on the outside under adverse weather conditions.
• Willingness and ability to adhere to both written and oral instructions.
• Must be dependable and punctual.
• Sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand technical manuals. 
• Performs other duties as required.


Education and Experience:

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED is required. 

Minimum Required Licenses and Certificates:

• Valid Driver’s License

Desirable Additional Qualifications:

• Graduate in the vocational arts from an accredited high school and a journeyman plumber’s license is preferred.
