About the Role

We’re seeking a Deputy Director of Public Works – Water & Wastewater to play a key leadership role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the City’s Water and Wastewater divisions within the Department of Public Works. In this in-person role, you will work closely with the Director of Public Works to oversee water and wastewater treatment operations, capital projects, infrastructure maintenance, regulatory compliance, and staff development.

As a strategic partner in long-term planning and a steward of the City’s infrastructure, you will be relied upon for your critical thinking, sound judgment, and keen attention to detail. In this role, you will serve as a subject-matter liaison with regulatory agencies and contribute valuable insight to budgeting, compliance, project planning, and grant administration—where accuracy, integrity, and accountability are essential.

The Education and Experience required that will help you succeed in this role includes

•    Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field.

•    Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in water/wastewater operations, infrastructure management, or public works, including supervisory or project leadership roles.

•    Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Knowledge of 

•    Operation and maintenance of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, well systems, and SCADA-based control systems 

•    Federal, state, and local regulations governing water and wastewater treatment

•    Public infrastructure budgeting, grant management, strategic planning, and project management

Skill in

•    Interpretation and application of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements (e.g., MDE, EPA) related to drinking water and wastewater operations.

•    Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds

•    Computer systems and applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office products, with a demonstrated skill set in Microsoft Excel and report-writing 

Ability to

•    Demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess operational challenges and implement timely, practical solutions

•    Establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently to complete multiple duties and assignments concurrently and in a timely manner

•    Demonstrate keen attention to detail and a drive for operational excellence

•    Maintain a high level of integrity, trustworthiness, and dependability 

•    Communicate clearly and consistently with staff, executive leadership, elected officials, and the community

•    Confidently and professionally represent the City during public meetings, inter-agency collaborations, and regulatory discussions

Grade 119 – 40 Hours Per Week 

Hiring Pay Range: $100,000 - $120,000, DOQ 

FLSA Status: Exempt

Emergency Status: Non -Essential
