The City of Glenarden is seeking a hardworking and dependable individual for an entry-level position within the Department of Public Works. This position performs a variety of manual labor and maintenance tasks in support of the upkeep of City streets, parks, curbs, gutters, municipal properties, and the Municipal Center. The incumbent is also responsible for the safe operation and basic maintenance of tools and equipment used in the performance of assigned duties. This position reports directly to the Director of Public Works.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Grounds and Landscaping Maintenance
- Mow, edge, aerate, and reseed lawns and landscaped areas.
- Trim shrubs, hedges, and trees; remove weeds and rake grounds.
- Remove litter, debris, and refuse from walkways, roadways, culverts, stairways, and parking areas.
- Perform general grounds clean-up and maintenance activities.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, steps, and public areas; apply salt and de-icing materials as needed.
Street and Public Infrastructure Maintenance
- Inspect streets and public areas for litter, potholes, damaged signage, and other maintenance issues.
- Assist with minor roadway, curb, and sidewalk repairs as assigned.
- Install and remove signage for City meetings, events, and public notifications.
- Raise and lower City flags daily and replace flags as necessary.
Building Maintenance and Custodial Services
- Perform minor repairs to municipal buildings and facilities.
- Provide routine custodial services, including mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning of glass and surfaces.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; restock supplies and maintain cleanliness standards.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate and maintain equipment such as lawn mowers, blowers, trucks, and other motorized tools.
- Safely operate debris removal and maintenance equipment.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic vocational or technical training in public works, construction, landscaping, or a related field is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- One year of experience in general labor, maintenance, landscaping, is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of maintenance and labor practices related to public works operations.
- Familiarity with hand tools, light equipment, and general maintenance techniques.
- Understanding of workplace safety practices, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Skill in performing maintenance of grounds, facilities, and infrastructure.
- Ability to perform routine manual labor and operate basic tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adhere to safety standards.
- Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public and work as part of a team.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles such as pick-up trucks and light-duty equipment.
- Ability to distinguish colors, including utility markings and traffic control indicators.

This is a full-time permanent position. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older to operate equipment. Day and hours of operation will be established by the Director of Public Works. The incumbent will be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays in support of City operations and special events. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a fingerprint screening, comprehensive background investigation, driving record, and drug and alcohol screening. Salary: $18.22 - $20.14 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
