The Town of Preston is seeking an entry level full-time Public Works Assistant. This position requires working in all areas of town maintenance, water, sewer, street repair, park upkeep, vehicle maintenance, snow removal, etc. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, confined spaces and be comfortable with heights. A valid driver’s license is required. Some Saturday and Sunday hours are required and must be on-call. Once hired, water and flagging certifications will need to be obtained.

Job Description – Public Works Assistant
 
Purpose: To assist the Town Superintendent with the maintenance of the Town infrastructure
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Streets:
• Check all streets regularly and keep them as clean as possible
• Keep grass and weeds out of the curbs and sidewalks
• Keep curbs repaired and/or painted as needed
• Repair streets as needed
• Maintain all street signs
• Remove snow after approximately 2 inches has fallen or as needed, salt all intersections
• Keep grass cut on all Town property
• Keep Town as neat and clean as possible
• Sewer:
• Maintain and repair all sewer mains and keep them flowing
• Test the sewer plant discharge daily
• Assist WWTP Contractors with O&M
• Keep lagoon neat and clean
• Maintain, clean, and repair both lift stations
• Water:
• Maintain and repair all equipment at the pump house
• Test the water daily for chlorine and ph
• Maintain and repair all water lines
• Read all meters quarterly and keep them working properly
• Do water taps and repair water lines
• Vehicles/Machinery:
• Maintain all public works vehicles.
• Wash and clean on a regular basis
• Miscellaneous Duties:
• Clean storm drain basins yearly or as needed
• Maintain all Town buildings as needed
• Notify DP&L of street light repairs
• Flush fire hydrants as needed
• Inspect playground equipment monthly
• Change welcome signs on a timely basis
• Keep park bathroom clean and stocked
• Empty trash cans at park as needed
• Perform various other duties as requested by management
• Assist with town events as needed

Qualifications:
• High School Diploma/GED
Physical Demands
• Ability to sit, stand, lift, bend and stoop for moderate periods of time
• Ability to talk, hear, walk, and use your hands to operate, handle, or feel objects or controls
• Ability to reach with hands and arms, push, pull and lift heavy objects
• Ability to lift and move heavy objects for short and long distances
• Ability to perform all sorts of manual labor
