GENERAL DESCRIPTION: People in this position perform a variety of manual labor tasks in order to maintain Town streets, rights of way, storm sewers, parks, equipment, trash stations, public buildings and other facilities. The person in this role will have both general responsibilities, as well as a focus on cleaning and maintaining the Colmar Manor Town Hall and Community Center. This position requires flexibility in skill sets, job assignment and applied time (including, at times, night and weekend hours.) This is a full-time position that reports to the Public Works Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are typical for this position. Not all listed duties may be required, and other duties may be required and assigned. Essential functions are divided into those focused on the Town Hall, and general duties outside the Town Hall.
Town Hall Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Performs and documents all cleaning, inspection and maintenance activities on a regular set schedule, as well as on an as needed basis.
- Coordinates with administrative staff around event set-up and take-down.
- Notifies management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs.
- Vacuums, sweeps, repairs, and mops floors.
- Cleans and (as needed) disinfects surfaces, windows, walls, mirrors, vents, etc.
- Disinfects commonly used items like desks, door handles, office tools, and phones.
- Dusts furniture and fixtures.
- Cleans and maintains restrooms.
- Empties trash and recycling bins.
- Carries out heavy cleansing tasks as required.
- Stocks and maintains supply rooms; distributes supplies as needed throughout the building.
- Knows and operates all Town Hall systems, including temperature control, fire detection, security, etc.
General Duties:
- Picks up trash from town receptacles, streets, storm drains, etc., and disposes of trash properly.
- Loads, transports, and unloads materials, equipment, and tools needed to perform assigned work.
- Operates non-CDL vehicles and equipment for the purpose of completing necessary tasks including snow plowing.
- Assists with snow removal on streets, driveways, sidewalks, and trails. This includes assisting in preparing snow removal equipment and vehicles used by equipment operators. It also includes shoveling and salting driveways, sidewalks, and trails.
- Works to collect and remove leaves, dirt and detritus from Town streets, curbs and parks.
- Mows and trims grass on a variety of Town properties to include; parks, rights of way, and the Town Hall grounds.
- Maintains playgrounds and park areas by performing general landscaping/grounds maintenance work such as weeding, planting, trimming, and watering trees, flowers, and shrubs.
- Maintains various types of signage within the town.
- Paints and conducts minor repairs on Town streets and sidewalks.
- Operates, washes, and cleans light motorized vehicles/equipment.
- Performs minor repairs on machinery, equipment and tools.
- Follows all health and safety regulations.
- Performs general maintenance work and other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Required Credentials:
- Valid driver’s license.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to drive/operate a variety of light and medium duty motorized equipment
- Ability to perform manual labor and use a variety of hand/power tools.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. with or without assistance and push or pull up to 150 lbs. with assistance in trash removal and grounds/street maintenance work.
- Ability to hear vehicle/equipment audio safety signals in traffic and job site situations.
- Ability to stoop, bend, and kneel in the performance of manual labor.
- Ability to walk long distances for extended periods of time on a daily basis.
- Ability to work in variable weather conditions including extremes of temperature and precipitation.
Communications Requirements:
- Ability to read work orders, equipment operating manuals, vehicle maintenance reports, work schedules, and route maps.
- Ability to communicate effectively with citizens inquiring about trash collection or other duties.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Preferred:
- Some experience performing manual labor and using small tools, including power tools.
- Some knowledge of the procedures and techniques for performing trash pickup, grounds maintenance, and manual labor.
- General knowledge of the operating procedures for assigned vehicles and equipment.
- General knowledge of preventive maintenance and minor equipment repair techniques.
- General knowledge of safety practices for lifting and performing assigned maintenance work.
- Multilingual capability a plus.
