The City of Glenarden Police Department is seeking experienced, service-oriented law enforcement professionals who are committed to protecting the community through professionalism, integrity, courage, and compassionate public service. Successful candidates must demonstrate sound judgment, honesty, reliability, and a strong commitment to community-oriented policing while serving the best interests of the residents and visitors of the City of Glenarden.

The Corporal performs a broad range of law enforcement duties to protect life and property, enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, preserve public order, and promote a safe community. The incumbent assists with coordinating daily patrol operations, ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures, monitors officer performance, and may serve as the acting shift supervisor during the Sergeant's absence. Corporals may be assigned to patrol operations or specialized units based on departmental needs and operational requirements.

Primary Duties:

Patrol and Law Enforcement Operations

  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for service.
  • Patrols assigned areas in uniform and marked vehicles to deter crime and maintain visible police presence.
  • Enforces applicable city, county, state, and federal laws, including traffic laws and municipal codes.
  • Responds to incidents of undetermined nature and assesses the need for appropriate emergency equipment and personnel.

Criminal Investigations

  • Investigates criminal activity encountered during patrol and conducts follow-up investigations of reported crimes and community concerns.
  • Responds to crime scenes through radio calls, notifications, or observation.
  • Secures and processes crime scenes; collects, preserves, and documents evidence.
  • Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects; conducts interrogations as appropriate.
  • Advises persons under arrest of their rights in accordance with the Miranda decision.
  • Conducts follow-up investigations of criminal offenses, including homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, arson, fraud, and theft.
  • Conducts surveillance and stakeouts as required.
  • Analyzes case information, crime reports, data, computer systems, maps, criminal histories, lineups, and photographs.
  • Seizes contraband and stolen property in accordance with legal and departmental requirements.

Courtroom and Legal Proceedings

  • Prepares cases for trial, hearings, and other legal proceedings.
  • Provides depositions and testifies in court regarding incidents for which the officer has direct knowledge.
  • Reviews investigative reports, notes, and documentation to ensure accurate and effective courtroom testimony.

Community Policing and Public Relations

  • Attends community meetings and maintains contact with community leaders and residents.
  • Communicates effectively with the public to provide information, assistance, and referrals to appropriate public or social services.
  • Responds to domestic disputes, neighborhood conflicts, and civil disturbances; evaluates situations and determines appropriate actions to resolve conflicts and preserve peace.

Use of Force, Arrest, and Emergency Response

  • Takes appropriate enforcement action, including arrest, to preserve peace and protect persons and property.
  • Subdues violent or resistant suspects using approved tactics and equipment.
  • Searches arrestees, transports or ensures the safe transport of individuals in custody.
  • Administers first aid and provides assistance to injured persons as needed.
  • Responds calmly and effectively during emergencies and potentially dangerous situations.

Equipment and Vehicle Management

  • Maintains, inspects, and demonstrates proficiency in the use of all issued equipment, including uniforms, firearms, ammunition, handcuffs, radios, flashlights, badges, and other duty equipment.

Communication and Coordination

  • Communicates orally and in writing with the public, fellow officers, supervisors, and other agencies to ensure complete understanding and coordination.
  • Collaborates, negotiates, and coordinates with individuals and organizations outside the department to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Keeps supervisors and command staff informed of significant incidents, trends, and operational issues; provides recommendations as appropriate.

Training and Professional Development

  • Attends in-service and mandated training to maintain required certifications and professional standards.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports related to assigned duties, investigations, and unit activities.

 Other Duties

  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license
  • Must possess a clean driving record
  • Must be in good standings with previous law enforcement agency and/or certification authority to apply.

This is a full-time, permanent position designated as essential. Work schedules are determined by management and may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and City-Sponsored events, as operational needs dictate.
