The City of Takoma Park Recreation Department is seeking an organized, community-minded Recreation Coordinator to lead the development and implementation of a new youth soccer program within the Department's roster of offerings. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of youth soccer in Takoma Park, work closely with volunteers, coaches, and families who have been participating in a local volunteer-run program and grow the program as a permanent part of the Recreation Department's offerings. The incumbent will report directly to the Recreation Manager II. Responsibilities include a mix of weekday administrative hours and required evening or weekend hours during active seasons, including registration periods, practices, and game days. Additional duties include assistance with other Recreation Department leagues, programs, and special events.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Establish a soccer program within the Recreation Department, integrating it into the Recreation Department's existing procedures;
  • Build relationships with coaches, volunteers, and parent leadership to ensure a successful league;
  • Recruit, screen, and coordinate coaches, referees, and volunteers, including ensuring required background checks, trainings, and certifications are completed;
  • Coordinate field and facility scheduling and permitting for practices, games, and special events;
  • Line fields as needed;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents and participants during each season, including communicating timelines, changes, and frequently asked questions;
  • Plan and oversee day-to-day soccer program operations, including scheduling, team formation, equipment and uniform ordering (anticipating approximately 2,500 participants in each season {Spring and Fall};
  • Design and run a summer youth soccer camp spanning a minimum of four weeks, overseeing all aspects from planning through daily operations
  • Develop marketing and outreach materials, in coordination with Department communications policies, to promote registration and build program participation;
  • Track program budgets, participation data, and equipment inventory, and prepare status reports as needed;
  • Resolve participant, parent, or volunteer concerns in a professional and timely manner;
  • Attend evening and weekend games, practices, and events as needed to support smooth program operations;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of sports programming (esp soccer) and management experience.
  • General knowledge of community resources and organizations.
  • Skill in planning and problem-solving.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and proven ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have valid Driver’s License;
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess Standard CPR/First Aid certifications.
  • Must be able to carry 25 lbs.
  • One to two years of progressively responsible experience or any combination of education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
